Volunteers are Priceless

This week is National Volunteer Week and an opportunity for us to recognise the work of the many people who have given up their valuable time to help give kids the gift of hearing, speech and language.

This year as we celebrate 25 years we also recognise the people who have contributed to our past, present and future. Volunteers play an incredible part in our story.

This week and year are both important reminders for me and my journey with Hear and Say. This year is my 10th year working at Hear and Say. My relationship with Dimity and the Hear and Say team extends beyond this time frame having first encountered Hear and Say as a volunteer.

I was working with Suncorp who had, and still have, a very successful staff volunteering program. I chose to give my volunteering time to Hear and Say because I could see the valuable work that Dimity and the team were doing. My volunteering experience was invaluable for my future as it led me a year later to a position at Hear and Say as a pseudo GM and six years later I was honoured to become the CEO.

When Hear and Say first opened volunteers were absolutely critical as Dimity needed the ‘brains’ and the ‘brawn’ to make her vision for the future a reality. Today volunteers continue to remain a vital part of what we do and this week is an opportunity for us to say THANKS!

From people like Sue, (photographed above at LEAP)who every Tuesday for over six years has come to the Brisbane Centre to assist in our LEAP Playground as well as help out in our Admin team, we say thank you.

To the many corporates who provide both professional training days as well as spend the time tidying in the garden, we say thank you. To the parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who pitch in at our fundraising events or in the case of our Ladies Long Lunch  are actually hosting the event, we say thank you.

And leaving the best to last, to our volunteer Board and our staff and their family members who regularly give up their own time to be there for us, we say thank you.

It is so true that volunteers don’t get paid because what they do is priceless and we are forever in their debt.

Ps, Want to know more about volunteering at Hear and Say. Drop us a line and tell us a little about what you are seeking to assist us with. We would love to hear from you.
