Helping children to reach their full potential.

Down Syndrome Awareness Month

Lucy is a beautiful one-year-old with a dedicated family and community surrounding her – including the team at Hear and Say. Lucy comes along to listening and spoken language therapy lessons, audiology appointments and occupational therapy sessions.

“Hear and Say is a massive part of our world, as we spend quite a bit of time there since Lucy was diagnosed with her hearing loss. Everyone we’ve seen has been exceptionally professional, helpful, knowledgeable and caring in our journey,” said Lucy’s mum, Monique.

Lucy was also born with Down syndrome, and in a heart-warming act that proved just how phenomenal the Hear and Say community is, Monique combined her appreciation for Hear and Say while simultaneously raising awareness for Down syndrome.

“Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Down Syndrome Australia couldn’t run their annual October fundraiser, so instead they came up with a campaign called #21yourway,” said Monique.

“As a community we were encouraged to do 21 things to raise awareness and support for Down Syndrome Australia, and I chose to do 21 acts of kindness to bless the people who have helped us on our journey so far with Lucy,” said Monique.

The Hear and Say team were delighted to receive an array of little cakes as part of Monique’s 21 acts of kindness.

“We couldn’t do this alone and I am super grateful for all the people who have helped us,” said Monique.

Panic set in as we waited 4 days in hospital for an ENT to explain her condition, by which point we already had all the answers from Simone, who runs the Microtia and Atresia Program at Hear and Say.
