Helping children to reach their full potential.

First Day Of Prep For Eager Evie

A child’s first day of Prep is a momentous day for all parents, but for Renee and Toby this was truly a milestone to celebrate their family’s journey.

When their eldest daughter, Evie was born, they found out their little girl did not have a fully developed right ear. Evie had two rare conditions known as microtia and atresia, and now five years old, wears a bone conduction hearing aid.

“From the moment we walked into Hear and Say we were welcomed with open arms – we received so much information, and our worries were immediately put at ease,” said Renee.

“We attend the Microtia and Atresia Conference in Brisbane every year which helps put us in contact with various equipped people to support us on Evie’s journey.

“We also recently travelled to the United States where Evie had reconstructive surgery; she is so happy with her new ear created using 3D printing technology.”

As Evie starts this big next step in her schooling life, her speech and language is on par with that of her peers – thanks to the dedication of her family.

“Partial hearing loss can be met with many differing opinions but Hear and Say has armed us with knowledge to give her every opportunity in life and ensure every door is open,” said Renee.

Maia’s Story

At 9.10pm on 24 October 2013 our beautiful daughter Maia was born.

The moment of elation was short-lived as we immediately noticed her left ear was missing. I frantically looked to the medical team around me for answers but received none.

Panic set in as we waited 4 days in hospital for an ENT to explain her condition, by which point we already had all the answers from Simone, who runs the Microtia and Atresia Program at Hear and Say.
