Helping children to reach their full potential.

How to Get Your Child’s Hearing Tested

It may be that you’ve noticed your child responding to questions with “Huh?” more frequently, or they always seem to want the TV volume up louder, or that their teacher has raised a concern about their concentration in the classroom.

There are many reasons why families may be worried about their child’s hearing, and look to book a hearing test.

For young children especially, it is important that a hearing test is conducted by experienced paediatric audiologists.

Children of all ages – even newborn babies – can have their hearing tested at Hear and Say. While not necessary, having an audiology referral from your GP may provide access to a Medicare rebate that will partly cover the cost of the appointment.

Having delivered specialised speech therapy and hearing programs for almost 30 years, Hear and Say has a wealth of experience working with children of all ages – and our comfortable, colourful centres are designed with families in mind.

Different approaches to hearing assessments are taken depending on the age of the child:

  • For young babies, diagnostic testing is undertaken while they are asleep, referred to as an Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR).
  • For children under five years of age, typically two audiologists are present – one audiologist conducts the testing, while the other guides the child on what they need to do and maintains their focus with a game or toy. For very young children (up to approximately age three), children are taught to look for a puppet appearing in a window when they hear a sound.
  • Older children are shown how to press a button or raise their hand when they hear the sound – similar to a standard hearing test for adults.
  • If a child is unable to provide the required responses due to age, health conditions or other reasons, we can use automatic objective measures – that is, tests which don’t require a direct behaviour from the child themselves – to provide information about their hearing.

Your audiologist will guide you through your child’s hearing diagnosis, next steps and how to help manage any hearing health issues you may be concerned about in your child’s everyday life.

Maia’s Story

At 9.10pm on 24 October 2013 our beautiful daughter Maia was born.

The moment of elation was short-lived as we immediately noticed her left ear was missing. I frantically looked to the medical team around me for answers but received none.

Panic set in as we waited 4 days in hospital for an ENT to explain her condition, by which point we already had all the answers from Simone, who runs the Microtia and Atresia Program at Hear and Say.
