Hear and Say is extremely privileged to facilitate the moment when a child is able to hear sound using their new technology for the very first time.
Often, a baby with profound hearing loss will never have heard sound before. So, families who visit Hear and Say are able to choose their first words, and see the child’s reaction as together, we truly open a world of sound.
It’s a very emotional moment with a wide range of reactions, but which always ends in celebration.
Our team of Audiologists works closely with each family to support them through technology candidacy testing, surgery, and recovery, to ensure every child is given the best care.
Our Listening and Spoken Language Specialists are also involved, to explain to friends and family members the intricacies of hearing loss, therapy and technology.
Our donors and fundraisers are often involved too, as we share this magical moment with the people who enable it to happen.
At 9.10pm on 24 October 2013 our beautiful daughter Maia was born.
The moment of elation was short-lived as we immediately noticed her left ear was missing. I frantically looked to the medical team around me for answers but received none.
Panic set in as we waited 4 days in hospital for an ENT to explain her condition, by which point we already had all the answers from Simone, who runs the Microtia and Atresia Program at Hear and Say.
