Helping children to reach their full potential.

Thanks to the past, the future is ours to own

When I reflect back on Hear and Say’s 25 years, and in particular the ten years that I have been with the organisation, I am inspired by how far we have come.

In those very early days, in the 90’s, Hear and Say was taking its very first steps. We were small, we were uncertain and we were learning. We moved from toddler stage to the awkward teens in the early 00’s and started to find our own way.

In our 25th year as young adults, we are still maturing however the path we have followed has led us to where we are. We are the product of years of experience, of our combined knowledge and more importantly of continued support of many.

We are indebted to the vision that Dimity, as Founder, had for Hear and Say, and the many people who believed in that vision. Our families, our volunteers, our Board members, our donors, our staff and all of our communities, who have helped shape the Hear and Say of today.

As we celebrate 25 years, it is timely we reflect on our role then and today, and how much it has changed. Yes, there has been many changes, however the focus remains the same; to improve the lives of children, families and the community.

As we continue to refine our role into the future, we must ensure that we can respond to not just the child and family need but the needs of the community, our staff, our donors and supporters. By doing this we can reach further into the community and be ready to support in this ever-changing landscape.

Looking back, as we move forward, means using the lessons of yesterday to become even stronger. Thank you to those who have accompanied us on this amazing 25 year journey. We hope you will continue to be with us and for those who are new, welcome.

Maia’s Story

At 9.10pm on 24 October 2013 our beautiful daughter Maia was born.

The moment of elation was short-lived as we immediately noticed her left ear was missing. I frantically looked to the medical team around me for answers but received none.

Panic set in as we waited 4 days in hospital for an ENT to explain her condition, by which point we already had all the answers from Simone, who runs the Microtia and Atresia Program at Hear and Say.
