Hear to Learn

School Hearing Screening Program

Are you sure your students can hear you?

Hear and Say are school hearing screening experts, since we launched Hear to Learn in early 2016, we have screened more than 27,000 students across Queensland.

A child’s hearing may change over time, often without the child, parent or teacher noticing, so it is important to monitor a child’s hearing even if they have passed previous hearing tests.

Hearing difficulties may have a significant impact on a child’s ability to learn. Children with a hearing loss may experience speech and language delays, educational difficulties, behavioural problems and often require increased support.

The screening takes approximately 7 minutes per child and is performed by our team of audiometrists and screeners experienced in working with children.

Hear and Say can work with the school and families to provide Audiology, Speech and Language, and Occupational Therapy, as well as a dedicated educational support program and access to classroom sound solutions.

Did you know?

Hear and Say has delivered two rounds of the Hear to Learn – School Hearing Screening program to primary schools in Central Queensland.

Delivered in partnership with the program’s founding regional partner, Thiess, the screening program has tested the hearing of more than 330 students across 10 schools in the Bowen Basin, that’s 1886 ears!

Across the 10 schools visited, an average of 23.5% of students were found to be experiencing a hearing or ear health issue that require a follow-up with a GP, a hearing test, or further monitoring by the parent.

“It was a wonderful experience for the team from Hear and Say to visit the students of Banana State School, to deliver their Hear to Learn – School Hearing Screening program. The sense of hearing is vital to all young children in their learning journey, and if there are problems that go undetected this can result in considerable learning difficulties. This was a fantastic bonus for parents as well as they did not have to travel to have this assessment done for their children. We’d love to express our gratitude to the Hear to Learn team and the program’s sponsor, Thiess.” – Elaine Pelling, Principal, Banana State School

Maia’s Story

At 9.10pm on 24 October 2013 our beautiful daughter Maia was born.

The moment of elation was short-lived as we immediately noticed her left ear was missing. I frantically looked to the medical team around me for answers but received none.

Panic set in as we waited 4 days in hospital for an ENT to explain her condition, by which point we already had all the answers from Simone, who runs the Microtia and Atresia Program at Hear and Say.
