Managing Your NDIS Plan

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to eligible people in Australia with a permanent and significant disability, to access supports and services based on their needs. It is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

Early on in the NDIS planning journey, you’ll be asked to make a choice as to how you would like your NDIS plan managed. There are three ways you can manage your NDIS plan, as outlined below.


Sometimes referred to as NDIA-managed, this option means your providers (such as Hear and Say) will claim directly from your NDIS plan for the services they deliver. You can only access services from providers who are registered with the NDIS. This is the easiest option for people who are only accessing services through one provider, which is often the case for Hear and Say families.


Self-managing gives you complete control over how and where your NDIS funds are spent. This option means you are responsible for paying providers directly for services received; submitting payment requests online via the NDIS myplace portal; and keeping record of supports purchased with your NDIS funds. Families and individuals who choose to self-manage their NDIS plan are required to pay for Hear and Say appointments on the day of service, and will receive a receipt for claiming via the myplace portal. Once a payment request has been submitted, you will be reimbursed with from your NDIS plan typically within 24 to 48 hours.


Engaging a third party or financial intermediary organisation to manage your NDIS funds is known as plan-managed. Your plan manager will be responsible for submitting payment claims, paying provider invoices, keeping track of spending and completing financial reporting requirements. Before you can access NDIS funds, you’ll need to select a plan management provider and enter into a service agreement with them. Additional funding will be allocated within your NDIS plan to pay for this. Once you’ve chosen a plan management provider, it’s important that you let Hear and Say know who they are to ensure all future invoices are forwarded to them for payment.

Maia’s Story

At 9.10pm on 24 October 2013 our beautiful daughter Maia was born. 

The moment of elation was short-lived as we immediately noticed her left ear was missing. I frantically looked to the medical team around me for answers but received none.
